Talking
about the Art Salon of BaiShiWan.
I always see my ceramics, those old ceramics. They carry the spirit that
most people have lost. Lost
too, is the mindfulness about the true nature of our lives. I questioned how
we could face the true fact, the reality of practical survival, while at the
same time concentrating on our art. I
never felt the reality so practically as I do today.
This unique gathering at Baishiwan gave me a fresh kind of spirit, an
awakening. Baishiwan Art Salon added a new core and a colorful new palette
for my life -- Zhimin, Peibo, Daxiang, Shibin, Leiming, Xuefeng, Zhekun --
together we do the things that we should do as traditional writers and
painters. We all have our own work. We write in calligraphy, write poems,
paint, taste teas, play with clay, and look deep within ourselves to the
spirit of ourselves, trying to really feel the texture and substance of our
daily lives. We never add
unexamined thoughts, doctrines, or philosophy to our works. We never force a
change in direction, we just enjoy the movement, the journey, not the
destination. A “Salon” is not about the end result, it is a spiritual
journey and a way of life together… a literary, artistic, and spiritual
way of seeing. We are walking our path, walking, just walking. Naturally
there is a place we want to go, but we can also affirm that the way includes
what’s forgotten, changed, mournful and sad, these are a part of life.
These are building our spirits, a higher and more pure spirit. We use
“higher and pure” to describe this true spirit world, we don’t take it
lightly, we are sincere in attempting to rise above the unnecessary things
of life to live in the essential things of Art.
